For oil-based treatments such as relaxation, deep tissue or aromatherapy massage, you will be draped with towels throughout and only the area being worked on is uncovered.

What is the difference between Thai massage and deep tissue massage?

Thai massage works along the whole body using rhythmic compression, rocking and assisted stretching, usually clothed and without oil — it tends to feel active and mobilising. Deep tissue massage uses slower, firmer, more localised pressure with oil to work into deeper muscle layers in a specific area. Thai massage suits people who feel generally stiff and want movement; deep tissue suits a particular area of stubborn tightness.

What pressure is used during a deep tissue massage?

Firm and progressive, but always within your comfort. Lee will check in on pressure as the treatment goes on, and it can be eased or increased at any point. Deep tissue work can feel intense but should never be painful — tell your therapist straight away if it does.

Can the treatment be adjusted for sensitive or painful areas?

Yes, and it should be. Tell Lee before the treatment starts about any area that is injured, bruised, recovering or simply uncomfortable to have worked on, and it will be avoided or treated more gently. You can also ask for the pressure or the area of focus to change at any time during the session.

Anything that could affect how you should be treated: injuries, recent surgery, pregnancy, skin conditions, medications such as blood thinners, ongoing medical conditions, and areas that are painful or sensitive. Also mention what you want from the session and what pressure you prefer. None of it is intrusive — it is what allows the treatment to be adjusted safely for you.

Is massage suitable during pregnancy?

Please tell Lee that you are pregnant when you book, and how far along you are, so the treatment and your positioning can be adjusted appropriately. Some treatments are not suitable during pregnancy. If you have any pregnancy-related complications, check with your doctor or midwife before booking.

When should massage be avoided?

Accepted Answer

Postpone your appointment if you are unwell, feverish or have an infection, and let Lee know before booking if you have recently had surgery, have a skin infection or open wound in the area, have blood clots or a clotting disorder, or are receiving treatment for a serious medical condition. Massage is not a substitute for medical care — if you have undiagnosed pain, please see your doctor.

People using massage to manage ongoing work or training-related tightness often come every two to four weeks; people booking for relaxation often come less frequently. Lee can suggest a rhythm that fits how your body responds, with no pressure to commit to a schedule.
